Established in 1946 with a mission to become one of the world's great universities, the Australian National University (ANU) has forged an outstanding reputation as Australia's leading research university. As Australia's only truly national university, the ANU leads the world in research across a spectrum of disciplines and also offers a unique range of research-led degree programs. To learn more about ANU, please visit their Web site at www.anu.edu.au.
The ANU voice/PABX network was at the end of its life and the external copper cable plant supporting it was deteriorating and creating support issues, resulting in increased services costs. Shifts in teaching and learning technology also placed greater demands on the ANU data network;a network already faced with capacity constraints. ANU required a solution that was IP connected and still provided traditional services. ANU needed a solution to grow and migrate with the needs of the University.
Specific requirements for this new integrated communications network (ICN) were set and a comprehensive assessment of various vendors was launched. ANU selected Avaya and NSC, an Avaya BusinessPartner, to provide Avaya IP based solution that would keep it at the forefront as a leading education and research institution. This was based on Avaya's ability to deal with complex integration of voice support systems. Another decision factor was that Avaya has a full suite of products that delivers an integrated system.
The Avaya solution is designed to 1) seamlessly integrate with the ANU's new IP-based Gigabit Ethernet campus area network; 2) enhance the telephony feature set and introduce contact centre services; 3) deliver a system availability of 99.999% on a distributed architecture; and 4) support up to 15,000 endpoints. As of April 2005 there are a total of 10,400 IP endpoints.
The University made a strategic decision to implement a full IP telephony system, a decision that was supported by a business case over a 5 to 10 year lifecycle. The solution is designed to support 15,000 IP telephones around ANU's 130 building campus in Canberra and three remote campuses, enough for all of ANU's 3,300 staff and 11,000 students to simultaneously be on the phone and online.
The contract was signed in October, 2002 with the phased implementation completed in July, 2003.
The Avaya solution includes eight Avaya S8700 Media Servers powered by Avaya Communication Manager, Release 1.3, and 108 Avaya G700 Media Gateways. The Avaya Integrated Management suite of applications is also used for centralized monitoring and management.
ANU has recently reconfigured their system, separating out their student accommodation endpoints into a “student voice service”, which will include some 530 SIP phones for a new student accommodation wing, as well as the existing 2,600 services. They now have a “corporate voice service”, with the 5 9s , mission critical environment, and this student environment will allow them to explore SIP options – presence, etc, and converged apps, where, students being students will both push the technology envelope and push the security envelope to the max.
The University sees its investment in what is now a single IP fabric as essential in preserving itself position as world class research and education institution. In addition to this enabling investment the move to IP telephony will have direct financial benefits , including reduced costs and increased productivity based on:
· Greater use of self-management for MACs and directory updating;
· Reduction in equipment and associated costs with the move to IP endpoints ;
· Scalability of infrastructure to support growing user population and demands ; and
· Improved ease of implementation of new applications and user acceptance
